program description |
Dual Diagnosis simply means that a co-existing disorder is present a psychiatric illness coupled with a substance abuse history. Research has determined that up to forty percent of people entering treatment have co-existing disorders. Please don’t mistake a psychiatric illness as falling into the stereotype labels of “crazy, loony, off their rocker or insane.” These antiquated labels have stigmatized and have kept those who need help from seeking treatment. Most dual diagnosed actually have a mild form of depression referred to as dysthimia. This disorder is quite common amongst the substance abuse population due to the fact the taking of the drug or the drink is a form of self-medicating. One drinks and drugs out the feeling of necessity not to party or have a good time. Rather just to keep intact with out going totally over the edge, to never return. So are the thoughts and beliefs of those with dysthimia. It is accompanied with a constant feeling of being annoyed, by just about everyone and everything. There is no logical specific reason, its just there, bothered. Many dual diagnoses have a history of being wrongly diagnosed. Mistreatment of this illness, even when a person is in drug recovery, usually results in relapse. These disorders can be very successfully treated if holistically approached. That is, treating one in combination with the other. Our best successes at Comeback Treatment Centers with dual diagnosis follow certain protocols. At CTC, our team psychiatrist assesses clients who have a history of these disorders and a psychological history is evaluated. Medical and medication history is also assessed. Proper medication is prescribed to achieve ‘balance.’ Once a week follow-ups are usually the norm. Continued treatment, balancing medication under a psychiatrist’s supervision achieves the best result. |
