Schizophrenia is generally considered to be a brain disorder that arises from a genetic predisposition. Although many people who suffer from schizophrenia have problems with drug abuse, drugs do not cause it. Often though the use of certain drugs is associated with the early appearance of psychotic symptoms in people who are later diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Drug-induced psychosis is not the same thing as schizophrenia though the symptoms may be similar.

Even w/all the medications (8 meds a day)his short-term memory is shot and consequently he becomes frustrated easily. My son's physician tells me that some people have been able to recover from this type of illness if they stop all drug abuse, have age on their side and contigent on prior drug abuse. The question: Is the illness drug induced or did the drugs exacerbate an ultimate condition?
