FOUNDED:
1971 by Jack Erickson
GENERAL:
The Erickson S-64 Aircrane helicopter is the modified, type certificated
evolution of the S-64 Skycrane originally built by Sikorsky in 1968. Erickson
Air-Crane manufactures, owns, and operates the largest fleet of S-64 Aircranes
in the world.
COMPANY OPERATION:
Erickson currently operates nineteen S-64 helicopters around the world
performing Aerial Timber Harvesting, Heavy Construction, and Aerial Firefighting.
IMPROVEMENTS/INNOVATIONS:
The Erickson S-64 Aircrane Helitanker features a 2,650-gallon (10,000
litre) firefighting tank with a microprocessor controlled, variable flow,
multiple drop, delivery system. A flexible hose "Hover Snorkel" refills
the tank in water sources as shallow as 18 inches (45 cm) in 45 seconds.
A rigid hydrofoil ram scoop or "Sea Snorkel" allows the helicopter to refill
the firefighting tank in fresh water and seawater sources. "The Water Cannon"
horizontal nozzle delivers a 160-foot (49 m) stream of water or foam mix
at a rate of up to 300 gallons per minute (~1,136 lpm) for 8 minutes. The
cannon was built to combat high-rise structure fires in congested inner
city locations.
